    Specified as a Type 1 Airport under the Airport Development Law and renamed Osaka International Airport.

1958

    Airport is completely returned by US forces. Renamed Osaka Airport, the new enterprise is managed by the Minister of Transport.

Itami Air Base

1951

  • [ Oct. ]
    Japan Airlines reopens regular civilian routes (Haneda-Osaka-Fukuoka).

1945

  • Airport is confiscated by US forces, renamed Itami Air Base, and used to house US Air Force troops. Total area covers 1,850,000 m2 and number of runways is expanded to four by end of WW2. (Length of runways: 1,100 m, 1,300 m, 1,600 m, and 1,300 m)

    Osaka No. 2 Airport completed. (Length of runways: 680 m and 830 m)

1936

  • [ Dec. ]
    The Civil Aviation Bureau of the Ministry of Communications and Transportation starts construction of the Osaka No. 2 Airport to act as a replacement for the existing Osaka Airport (which was located near the mouth of the Kizu River in Osaka city).

As of 1st April, 2016, Kansai Airports succeeded the operating right for both Kansai International Airport and Osaka International Airport. Please note that the name of the previous operator, New Kansai International Airport Company, Ltd., is described in some materials and articles related to previous operation.
